This grass was introduced from South African, Australian, and New Zealand sources.
It is possibly a hybrid between Johnsongrass, S. halepense, and a cultivated sorghum, S. bicolor.
It resembles Johnsongrass but is coarser and taller growing with larger stems and leaves.
The rhizomes are short and stout in contrast to the long ones of Johnsongrass, and it does not become a troublesome weed.
Its adaptation is similar to that of Johnsongrass, or roughly to the Cotton Belt.
